Hedgehog Care Tips

Are you considering adopting a hedgehog? Congratulations! These little guys really are adorable. However, they are also quite unique. A local Michigan City, IN veterinarian discusses hedgehog care below.

Do Some Research

Like other small pets, Hedgie will need a great cage, a proper diet, and regular veterinary care. Do plenty of research, and ask your vet for specific care tips.

Keep Fido And Fluffy Away

We love dogs and cats, but they really just aren’t good playmates for smaller pets. If you have other pets, keep them away from your hedgehog.

Offer Lots Of Toys

Hedgehogs are quite playful, which is always super cute to watch. Keep Hedgie active and entertained by giving him lots of fun playthings. Some options are little stuffed animals, balls, children’s blocks, toy cars, and chew toys. Hedgehogs tend to like colorful things, so keep that in mind.

Let Hedgie Settle

Hedgehogs are quite timid. Let your prickly pal settle in before you try to handle him. At first, just talk to him, give him treats, and let him get used to your smell. You may want to let him sleep on an old tee-shirt you’ve worn. As you may know, hedgehogs roll themselves up into little balls when they get frightened. Hedgie may do this a lot at first. Don’t try to force him to uncurl. Just be gentle, and give him time.

Don’t Startle Your Buddy

Hedgehogs can’t see very well. They rely more on their noses than their eyes. This means that it’s very easy for you to accidentally spook your little buddy. Be aware of where your shadow is: Hedgie could mistake it for a predator. Also, never pick your pet up from behind, or when he is sleeping.

Know Hedgie’s Schedule

Did you know that hedgehogs are nocturnal? This may become important if you are getting Hedgie as a child’s pet. The little guy could keep your youngster awake! Get your hedgehog a solid exercise wheel that he can use after dark.

Find A Great Vet

Just like any other pet, Hedgie must have proper veterinary care. You’ll need to find a vet that is experienced with exotics. Hedgie’s doctor can also be a great source of information for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
