Cat Cuddling Mistakes

Calling all cat lovers! September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! This is one cause we’re more than happy to support. We know quite a bit about keeping cats healthy: good food, comfy beds, clean litterboxes, and regular veterinary care will cover Fluffy’s basic needs. What about keeping your feline pal happy? Well, a big part of that is paying attention to her. But not too much. In fact, cats can be a bit confusing in this area. They can be loving and snuggly one moment, only to suddenly bite for no reason. Read on as a Michigan City, IN vet discusses some common kitty cuddle mistakes.

Too Much Cuddling

Always let your cat decide when she wants to cuddle. If you constantly try to pick Fluffy up, she may feel stifled, and could get a bit uneasy or defensive. It’s also important to let your pet decide when cuddle time is over. When your kitty decides she’s had enough, just let her go.

Not Enough Attention

Cats can get very depressed if they feel isolated and/or ignored. Spend time with Fluffy every day. If she rubs against your legs or meows to beg for attention, go ahead and indulge these adorable requests for cuddles. Some kitties start purring as soon as you touch them or pick them up!

Improper Attention

Fluffy can be quite finicky about how she receives attention. Some cats like being held, while others will immediately start squirming when you pick them up. And, while most kitties hate having their tummies rubbed, some will flop over like dogs, wanting belly rubs. Pay attention to what your pet likes and dislikes.

Giving Cuddles To Other Cats

Cats can get very territorial and jealous. If you come home smelling like another kitty, your feline buddy will definitely notice. If you have more than one cat, pay them equal attention. If you pet Mittens but ignore Fluffy, you’ll have an envious and resentful furball on your hands!

Ending Kitty Cuddles Too Soon

Our feline pals fit purrfectly into our laps. However, we can’t spend all of our time being cat furniture. Sooner or later, you’ll be settled in with Fluffy purring and comfortable on your lap, and you’ll realize you need to get up. Oh no!
